lunch box idea #1 - how to wrap a rolled sandwich without cling film

I had been wrapping our sandwiches for the lunch box with cling film but as one of my goals for 2012 was to use less plastic in our lunch boxes, I had to figure out another way of wrapping them.

This is what I came up with.

I hope these instructions are easy enough to follow?!
It is an easy process when you get the hang of it.
When we have rolled sandwiches for lunch, I make about ten for my family.
It really doesn't take long.

An up-side of this wrapping method (in addition to reducing plastic use) is that kids can easily unwrap their own sandwich without an adults help.

How do you reduce the plastic in your packed lunches?

  1. good on you! I haven't bought cling wrap for a few years but do still love baking paper and don't want to give it up!
sandwiches and wraps keep perfectly well in reusable containers with lids. you can buy some standard sandwich loaf sized ones and wraps cut into two halves fit well into longer containers like takeout asian containers. I haven't found them to be dry at all.
    cheers

    1. Thanks Jodie, I'll have to try out some of your ideas. I love baking paper also. Have not come across a suitable alternative, yet. Have tried silpat and silicone sheets, but these are really expensive!!

  2. These are great instructions! I save all my reusuable containers and just keep washing them and reusing them for things like soups and casseroles, etc ... but I do use soooo much plastic for little things!

    1. Thanks for the encouraging words Jane. It is possible to have plastic free lunches, but we are still working on what that looks like for us. Thanks for your comment!

  3. Hi Nona, I have been using a great reusable sandwich wrap for the last few years. I got it online from biome store in Queensland.. I have a large, waterproof square which folds with Velcro as well as small pockets I use for sultanas, small biscuits, etc. I wipe these off when unpacking the lunch boxes and put through the wash on weekends. I am now onto my third year for these, great investment, and they have been to both primary and secondary school, no problems. They are much cheaper now than they were and there is a great range. Really worth a look at biomes site, google should do it, I am not very blog/tweet savvy, so not sure how to cut paste here.
